PROTECTION OF BIODIVERSITY DEPENDS ON EVERYONE
Despite of the fact there is a permanent threat to biodiversity. AzerTAj was informed in the Institute of genetic resources of the National Academy of Sciences, this threat is mainly connected with activities of man. The lakes of Hajigabul, Sarisu, Aggel, Mehman, Shilyan, Garasu situated along the lower of the Kura river have always been the place of reproduction of a number of valuable kinds of fish. After construction of a number of dams and regulation of the river’s flow, main places of fish spawning were limited and the scale of natural reproduction decreased.
On the other hand, water supply of the lakes joined with Kura aggravated.
Besides, correct usage of pesticides is of great importance in protection of biodiversity. Usage of 100 pesticides registered by the government commission in the Ministry of Agriculture is permitted. In some cases, prohibited pesticides are being supplied to the republic by different ways.
There are enough of laws in the republic on preservation of biodiversity. Recent years, Milli Majlis (Parliament) has passed over 20 laws regulating environment. A governmental commission was created according to the UN Convention “On biodiversity” and with the aims of providing fulfillment of commitments taken by the country. National program Substantial social and economic development and Reproduction and widening of woods have been approved this year, which assist the preservation of biodiversity.
Besides, 60 out of 400 non-governmental organizations in the country are ecological ones.
