Protests against euro adoption held across country in Bulgaria

Protests against the adoption of the euro and in support of preserving the Bulgarian lev were held across Bulgaria on Sunday, blocking major roads and intersections in a few places, according to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
Protestors gathered at Sofia's Eagles Bridge and blocked traffic at the intersection for about an hour, allowing only emergency medical vehicles to pass. The protest was monitored by police.
The demonstrators carried Bulgarian flags and banners calling for the preservation of the Bulgarian lev. They chanted “Resignation” and demanded the holding of a referendum on the euro adoption in 2026, as proposed by President Rumen Radev. The President's proposal was subsequently deemed inadmissible by Parliament Chair Nataliya Kiselova. Radev said he will petition the Constitutional Court on the matter.
After the gathering at Eagles Bridge, the protesters marched toward the National Assembly building. During the march, they chanted slogans in support of the Bulgarian lev and against the euro. Traffic was briefly blocked along Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd.
When they reached the Parliament building, the protesters shouted “Mafia, murderers” and “No to lobbyist laws.” They then proceeded to the intersection of Dondukov and Tsar Osvoboditel boulevards, where they again blocked traffic at 6:20 PM. In front of the Council of Ministers building, they once again chanted “Resignation” and “Jail.”
One of the main boulevards in Stara Zagora (South-central Bulgaria) was blocked by protestors on Sunday for three hours. The road to the nearby town of Kazanlak was also blocked. Protestors blocked the roundabout near Danube Bridge in Ruse (on the Danube) on Sunday afternoon.
