St. Petersburg hosting 19th OANA General Assembly




St. Petersburg, June 19, AZERTAC
The 19th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) has gotten underway in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The meeting of the organization, which comprises 41 news agencies from 33 countries, was organized by the TASS news agency as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
AZERTAC was represented at the meeting by Elshan Shahbalayev, a member of the agency's Board and Head of the Global Communications and Information Department.
At the first plenary session of the General Assembly, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov read out President Vladimir Putin's address to the participants.
The meeting also heard addresses from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming.
Addressing the meeting, TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov, the agency's First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman, President of China`s Xinhua News Agency Fu Hua, Executive Director of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and others spoke on the topic “News Agencies and Challenges in the Modern World.”
The General Assembly also featured a photo exhibition from OANA agencies. The event was attended by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Photographs by AZERTAC were also showcased at the exhibition.
Additionally, the winners of OANA's photo and writing competitions were awarded at the meeting.
As part of the General Assembly, a meeting of the Organization's Executive Committee was also held. The meeting reviewed the issues to be put to a vote, and decisions were made.
The meeting will continue its work on June 20.
