STATEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF AZERBAIJAN REPUBLIC
Such “elections”, fully contradicting international law and national legislation of Azerbaijan Republic, also in the conditions of continuation of aggression and occupation of the lands of one-third population of the Nagorny Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, who were ousted from their lands, can in no circumstances be considered lawful.
It is not for the first time, that in the occupied Nagorny Karabakh region of Azerbaijan there have been conducted “elections” and such illegal actions have always been decisively condemned by the international community and world states. The democracy cannot be established on the basis on ethnic purge and occupation. Thus, all efforts of the separatists aimed at deceiving international community are doomed to failure.
Such actions of the Armenian side will have negative influence on the existent process carried out for settlement of the conflict. “The done fact” cannot contain the basis of solution of the conflict. Neither the current situation in the occupied lands of Azerbaijan, nor any action aimed at strengthening the existent situation including conducting of elections can in no case be considered lawful.
The Republic of Azerbaijan reaffirms that forming of any legitimate government in the Nagorny Karabakh region of Azerbaijan is possible only after the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict will find its fair solution in the frame of international law and principles, the UN Security Council’s resolutions and relevant decisions of the OSCE.
