UN confirms U.S. notification of withdrawal from Paris Agreement

The UN on Tuesday confirmed the US' formal notification of its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, according to Prensa Latina.
"The US has notified the Secretary-General (Antonio Guterres), in his capacity as a depository, of its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on January 27 of this year," said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric during a news conference.
US President Donald Trump originally withdrew the US from the climate agreement in 2019. However, former President Joe Biden quickly re-entered the accord on his first day in office.
Soon after his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order to again withdraw the US from the agreement.
Recalling that the agreement was initially signed by the US on April 22, 2016, Dujarric said, "However, the country withdrew on November 4, 2020, before rejoining on February 19, 2021."
"According to Article 28, paragraph two, of the Paris agreement, the withdrawal of the United States will take effect on January 27, 2026," Dujarric said.
He emphasized the global commitment to climate action, and said: "We reaffirm our commitment to the Paris Agreement and support all effective efforts to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius."
