UNSC: Pakistan urges restraint and dialogue to defuse Venezuela crisis
Islamabad, Hilal Ahmad, January 6, AZERTAC
Pakistan has voiced serious concern over the situation in Venezuela, warning that rising tensions could have grave implications for regional and global stability. Islamabad has urged restraint and dialogue to defuse the unfolding crisis.
Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Usman Jadoon, made the remarks while speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council (UNSC). He said the latest developments were particularly troubling at a time when the international community was already facing multiple conflicts and crises.
The UNSC meeting was convened to discuss the situation in Venezuela following reports of the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by United States troops during a military action. Ambassador Jadoon warned that unilateral military action contravenes the doctrine of sovereign immunity, adding that such actions set dangerous precedents and risk eroding the foundations of the global legal framework. He expressed concern over the escalation of tensions and urged all parties to de-escalate the situation through dialogue and diplomacy.
The ambassador noted that the United Nations Charter obliges states to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another country. He stressed that durable solutions to political differences can only be achieved through peaceful means, with full respect for the will of the Venezuelan people and without external interference. Pakistan, he said, views the ongoing developments in Venezuela with profound concern.
At this critical juncture, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized, the path forward must be dialogue and diplomacy. He expressed hope that Latin America and the Caribbean would remain free from conflict and confrontation in order to continue on the path toward enhanced regional cooperation.
Reiterating that the UN Charter clearly obliges states to respect sovereignty and political independence and to avoid the threat or use of force, the Pakistani representative also underscored the importance of adhering to the principles of non-interference, sovereign equality, and the peaceful settlement of disputes as essential to maintaining international peace and security.
Pakistan’s representative reaffirmed his country’s commitment to working constructively within the UNSC to reduce tensions, promote peaceful conflict resolution, and uphold international law. He stressed that ensuring peace and stability in Venezuela, along with the well-being and prosperity of its people, should remain the objective of all international efforts.
