US AMBASSADOR MEETS AZERBAIJAN’S JUSTICE MINISTER
Ann Derse, United States ambassador to Baku, met Fikret Mammadov, Azerbaijan’s Justice Minister, to discuss the current state of judicial system in Azerbaijan.
Minister told of the actions that have been taken so far to strengthen the judicial power in Azerbaijan. He also touched upon improvement of the national legislation, establishment of new democratic institutions, forming of the courts of appeal and other issues.
Ambassador A. Derse stressed the importance of independent judicial power in democratic society, saying her country supports the successful legal and judicial reforms being implemented in Azerbaijan. The US diplomat praised progressive changes occurred in the justice and judicial systems of Azerbaijan, including the penitentiary field. She welcomed establishment of the appeal courts in the regions of Azerbaijan, development of legal institutions etc. She said her country is ready to cooperate in these fields.
Development of democracy, transparency in activities of courts, responsibility of judges, their training, official registration of legal entities were also discussed at the meeting.
