US Department of State makes things clear about US ambassador`s remarks
Washington, September 25 (AZERTAC). The Armenian bureau of Radio Liberty has published a video interview with US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern during which the diplomat makes statements contradicting US official policies with respect to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, in particular, the financial aid to the Karabakh conflict victims.
The next day, the US embassy in Yerevan clarified the statements made by the ambassador in the interview. The Radio Liberty published the following comments to the video interview by the embassy: “Explanatory note from the Embassy: According to the decision of the U.S. Congress dated 1998, the United States provided humanitarian assistance to those living in Nagorno-Karabakh to ensure access to safe drinking water and mine clearing projects. The United States does not provide any assistance to the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh authorities."
During a daily briefing in the US Department of State, AzerTAj correspondent asked deputy spokesperson of the State Department Marie Harf to clarify the comments Heffern voiced during the interview. Mrs. Harf stated that she was not aware of the fact and promised to learn about the issue and respond on the same day.
On the same day, after examining the facts following the briefing, U.S. Department of State spokesperson replied to AZERTAC, reaffirming the official explanation of the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan and the U.S. position on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
