VATICAN`s SECRETARY OF STATE MEETS WITH CHAIRMAN OF CAUCASIAN MUSLIMS` BOARD
Vatican`s Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone who is in Azerbaijan met Saturday with Chairman of the Caucasian Muslims` Board Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade.
Allahshukur Pashazade said opening of a Catholic church in Baku is another “triumph of tolerance”.
“Azerbaijan has been known not only for its growing economy, oil and other natural resources. Our greatest treasure is our hospitality, tolerance. All citizens, regardless of their nationality, are living in peace and are freely practicing their faiths in our country”.
On Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, the Chairman of the Caucasian Muslims` Board said Armenia`s occupation of twenty percent of his country`s territory resulted in over one million Azerbaijanis becoming refugees and IDPs.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, in turn, said Azerbaijan`s giving a warm welcome to late Pope John Paul II during his visit to Baku received a good response from around the world. “He left Azerbaijan with best impressions”, the Cardinal added.
Vatican`s Secretary of State said the Catholic Church will always remember that the President of Azerbaijan and the country`s Sheikhulislam attended an opening ceremony of its church in Baku.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone recalled that Vatican honored Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade with its order.
At the end of the meeting, the Chairman of the Caucasian Muslims` Board and Vatican`s Secretary of State exchanged keepsakes.
