WB ALLOCATES LOAN TO HEALTH SECTOR REFORM PROJECT

Agreement on allotment US $ 50 mln loan to the health sector reform project was signed October 9 between the World Bank and the government of Azerbaijan in ‘Excelsior hotel’. Oktay Shiraliyev, Azerbaijani Health Minister and WB manager for Azerbaijan Gregory T. Jedrzejczak signed the document.

The Azerbaijani government will allocate extra $ 28,3 mln, US Agency for International Development - $8 mln, UNICEF and WHO 470 and 35 thousands respectively.

The Health Sector Reform Project for Azerbaijan aims to improve overall health system stewardship and financing, and enhance equitable access to, and technical and perceived quality of essential healthcare services, in the selected districts in a fiscally responsible and sustainable manner with a view to improving health outcomes.

In her speech, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse highlighted the care of President Ilham Aliyev about the development of health system in the country. Minister of Finance Samir Sharifov, in his turn, pointed out the growth of the budgetary financing in healthcare system. The government will allocate 353 mln AZN from 2007 budget.

Salim Muslimov, head of Azerbaijan State Social Protection Fund said that special fund has to be created for insurance medicine, as well as amendments inserted into the Law on ‘Insurance Medicine’.
