WORLD REFUGEE DAY MARKED IN AZERBAIJAN

The Baku Office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and Azerbaijan State Committee for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) held a special event Wednesday at the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic to mark the World Refugee Day.

The event brought together Vise Speaker of Azerbaijan`s Parliament Bahar Muradova, prize-winner of UNHCR 2006 Nansen Refugee Award Akio Kanai as well as representatives of international organizations and diplomatic corps accredited in Baku, heads of executive bodies of Azerbaijan`s occupied regions.

The participants saw the exhibition featuring handworks of refugee children from Azerbaijan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Chechnya.

Speaking at the event, head of the UNHCR Baku Office William Toll said Azerbaijan is among the world countries having the largest number of refugees and IDPs . He also said Azerbaijan has done much to improve living standards of refugees and IDPs.

Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijan`s deputy prime minister, chairman of state committee for work with refugees and IDPs, spoke of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, stressing Armenia conducted the policy of ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijanis.
