13TH SESSION OF COMSTECH GENERAL ASSEMBLY STARTS IN PAKISTAN
The 13th session of General Assembly of the Organization of the Islamic Conference’s (OIC) Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation - COMSTECH, has started in Islamabad, Pakistan.
On President Parviz Musharraf’s invitation, Ministers of Science and Technologies, heads of Academy of Sciences and other senior officials of OIC member states are attending the session.
Member of Azerbaijan-Pakistani intergovernmental commission, Azerbaijan’s COMSTECH coordinator, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Ali Abbasov is taking part at the event.
President Musharraf, who chairs COMSTECH, presided the first session.
Azerbaijan was elected a member of the COMSTECH Executive Committee.
The next plenary session was moderated by Mr. Abbasov, who gave detailed information to participants about his country’s achievements in the areas of science and information technologies. The Minister said the Azerbaijani government attaches much importance to the development of science and technologies activities, noting the country has become one of the leading countries in the region in this field. Mr. Abbasov also talked about the project of establishment of innovation zones in the region.
The Azerbaijani minister went on to say that creation of information corridor between Eastern and Western countries would contribute to promotion of technology activities in the Islamic countries and OIC space. Mr. Abbasov added that his country would actively participate in this process.
The Minister had also several bilateral meetings with Coordinator General of COMSTECH and Chairman of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission Atta-ur-Rahman, President of Pakistan Academy of Sciences Ishfag Ahmad, Pakistan’s Minister of Science and Technologies Tehmina Daultana, Iranian Minister of Science, Researches and Technologies Mahammad Mehdi Zahedi, Afghanistan’s Minister of Communication Amirzai Sangin to exchange views on science and technology activities.
COMSTECH deals with promotion and cooperation of science and technology activities among the OIC member states.
