25-metre gladiator appears near Spartak stadium
Baku, August 23 (AZERTAC). A 24.5-metre-high statue of an ancient Roman gladiator was erected near the northern entrance of the Spartak football stadium in Tushino in the Northwestern Administrative Area. Workers began assembling the sculpture at 8 am. After the foundation was prepared, the statue was installed on a pedestal using a complicated and unique fastening technique.
This is the first such statue in Russia. A monument to the Starostin brothers, who played an outstanding role in the history of Russia’s legendary football club Spartak, will also be erected near the stadium.
The 42,000-seat stadium will open its doors in early September and serve as the club’s home pitch. On 5 September, it will host its first match — Spartak versus Crvena Zvezda (Serbia). The stadium will serve as a 2018 World Cup venue.
Earlier, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Development and Construction Marat Khusnullin announced that the basic construction and engineering works of the stadium have been completed. The technical acceptance procedure is slated for late August.
The final preparations are being made for opening a new metro station of the same name. It will provide convenient transit to the stadium for football fans.
