The 6th World Media Summit got underway in Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Hosted by Xinhua News Agency, the summit gathered over 500 participants from more than 100 countries and regions, including representatives of 208 mainstream media outlets, government agencies, and international organizations. Azerbaijan was represented at the event by Vugar Aliyev, Chairman of the Board of AZERTAC.

At the opening of the summit, themed "Artificial Intelligence and Media Transformation," Ma Xingrui, First Secretary of Party Committee of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, Fu Hua, president of Xinhua News Agency, Erkin Tuniyaz, Chairman of People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, as well as heads of foreign media outlets highlighted AI in media industry. They emphasized that advanced technologies, including AI, are having a significant impact on the media industry. They also highlighted that addressing the challenges posed by AI and leveraging these innovations to strengthen the media sector has become a key priority for global media organizations.

Highlighting the significant changes the world is currently experiencing in political, economic, social, technological, and environmental domains, the speakers emphasized that these shifts are also impacting the media. As a result, media outlets and journalists must explore new ways to address challenges, adopt innovations, and implement fresh approaches and methods.

Speaking at the summit, Chairman of Board of the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) Vugar Aliyev described the World Media Summit as a vital platform for experts and authorized persons from various countries to jointly explore the challenges faced by the media against the background of the changes taking place in the world.

Vugar Aliyev highlighted media`s role in educating the public about climate change and fight against it.

Providing insights into the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), set to be hosted by Azerbaijan, the Chairman of the Board of AZERTAC said that over 1,000 journalists have registered so far to cover the world's major event in environmental protection.

Vugar Aliyev emphasized the importance of close collaboration between the media outlets of the "Belt and Road" countries, which share the ancient history, common cultural values and economic cooperation, to ensure comprehensive coverage of COP29, which aims to tackle climate change. He also stressed the need to enhance journalists' awareness of climate processes to prevent the spread of misinformation.
