5th Plenary Session of TURKPA kicks off in Baku
Baku, June 13 (AZERTAC). The Fifth Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic Speaking Countries (TURKPA) has today started in Baku.
Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Ogtay Asadov made an opening speech at the session, and noted the importance of the unity among the Turkic speaking states.
Asadov said TURKPA contributed to establishing and developing ties among the Turkic speaking countries in a variety of fields.
He also stressed the importance of the strengthening of the TURKPA member states, adding it will help to increase effectiveness of the organization’s work.
Asadov also spoke of Azerbaijan’s development path in recent years.
The Speaker highlighted the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and noted that the 20 per cent of Azerbaijani lands were occupied and over 1 million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs as a result of the dispute.
He said Azerbaijan attracts the attention of international organizations to the occupation.
Asadov thanked the Turkic speaking states for supporting Azerbaijan`s stance on this issue.
Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Kabybulla Jakupov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan Asilbek Jeenbekov and Chairman of the Turkish Grand Assembly Cemil Cicek made speeches at the event.
Following the speeches, the agenda of the plenary session was approved.
The session will feature discussions on the activity of the TURKPA, election of chairman and deputy chairman of the standing committees, a report of the international observation mission from the Turkic speaking states on the Presidential election held in Azerbaijan, as well as approval of the budget of the organization for 2015.
The Baku Declaration will be adopted at the end of the session.
