American presents mugham at Washington University
Washington, April 20 (AZERTAC). Jeffrey Werbock, the US`s famous mugham specialist made a presentation on the Azerbaijan`s mugham at the George Washington University.
Addressing the student body, the musician spoke about his 40-year Azerbaijani mugham research experience. He provided an insight into what distinguishes mugham from other genres. According to him, there are social and traditional characteristics of the genre.
Speaking of the mugham traditions coming from the Karabakh region occupied by Armenia, Werbock said “Mugham is important for Azerbaijanis in terms of patriotism too.” He told of Shusha, cradle of Azerbaijani music.
He noted that his film on mugham would be ready soon. The premiere will be held in a number of the US cities.
Jeffrey Werbock fell in love with the Azerbaijani music in as early as 1971 and devoted all his life to popularization of the Azerbaijani mugham abroad. He organized hundreds of concertos and lectures in the US`s and Israel`s museums, colleges, universities and public centers.
