Apple and Mastercard to give free Tube travel to Apple Pay users

Apple and Mastercard are giving free Tube travel to people on the next four Mondays.

Fares will be free for anyone using Apple Pay and a Mastercard. The refunds will run on all of the Mondays between 23 November and 14 December.

Transport for London has supported Apple Pay since it was introduced, this summer. Along with contactless credit and debit cards, users can tap onto buses and tubes in the same way as a normal Oyster card. Nearly 25 per cent of journeys on pay as you go are now made using contactless cards or Apple Pay, according to Mastercard.

Apple Pay is used by opening the Wallet app on an iPhone or Apple Watch, and going through the setup procedure. Once that’s done, double clicking the home button on the phone or side-button on the Apple Watch turns it into a contactless card, letting it be tapped on the reader.
