Azerbaijan participates in international conference on combating narcotics
Vienna, March 16 (AZERTAC). The high level segment of the 57th Session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs was organized in Vienna, Austria on March 13-14.
The aim of the event was the high-level review of the implementation by Member States of the Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem, as well as ways of fighting drugs in the light of the new challenges.
The event was attended by the Swedish Queen, ministers from 27 countries and other top-ranking officials and heads of some international organizations.
Azerbaijan was represented in the event with a delegation led by Deputy Interior Minister Vilayat Eyvazov. The delegation included representatives of the Ministry of National Security, State Customs Committee, Foreign Ministry and permanent mission of Azerbaijan to international organizations in Vienna.
Speaking at the event, Eyvazov spoke about the consequences of drug-related problems, saying these problems impede socio-economic development of countries and undermine public security and stability.
Eyvazov said the leadership of the country pays a special attention to this problem. According to him, the state commission on Combating Drug Addition and Illegal Drug Trafficking of Azerbaijan monitors and takes preventive measures against drug trafficking and addiction.
The Deputy Minister noted that non-governmental organizations are also invited to make their contribution to the measures put in place by the government.
The Deputy Minister said Azerbaijan actively cooperates with the countries within the framework of the UN, Council of Europe, OSCE, BSEC, CIS, GUAM and others.
Thanks to the efforts of the Azerbaijani delegation, some parts of the Ministerial Statement adopted at the event were amended in line with national interests of Azerbaijan. These amendments are related to the need for considering international law, territorial integrity and sovereignty principles in the fight against drugs.
