Azerbaijani Ambassador to Qatar highlights the country`s sport achievements
Baku, February 18 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijani Ambassador in Doha Tofig Abdullayev has highlighted the country`s achievements in sport in an interview with local media as he attended the National Sport Day celebrations in the Qatari capital.
The Ambassador said state-of-the-art sport infrastructure had been built in Azerbaijan, adding “this allowed the country to have successfully played host to high-profile international tournaments in recent years”.
Abdullayev said Azerbaijan`s capital Baku would host the inaugural European Games in 2015. “I invite citizens of Qatar as well as all sport lovers in the country to Azerbaijan to watch the European Games.”
The Ambassador also praised economic development of both Azerbaijan and Qatar, saying the countries` growing economic power was “drawing a greater deal of attention to us on the global scale”. “So we can say that our countries will continue to play a leading role in terms of international cooperation,” said Abdullayev.
He said relations between Azerbaijan and Qatar had ancient history, expressing confidence “these bounds will further strengthen under President Ilham Aliyev and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani”.
The National Sport Day is a public holiday in Qatar, held annually on the second Tuesday in February, with the main objective of promoting a healthy lifestyle among its population.
The celebrations are attended by Qatari officials, foreign ambassadors in Doha and representatives of international organizations in the country.
