AZERBAIJANI OFFICERS RECEIVING EDUCATION IN MARSHALL CENTER
As was informed to AzerTAj from the press-service of the Ministry of Defense, general - colonel Safar Abiyev, having welcomed the visitor, thanked him for the assistance rendered in receiving education by the Azerbaijani officers in the Marshall European Center for Security and training them, as experts. The Minister has told: “We send our officers to the Marshall Center since 1996. For today, 40 officers from Azerbaijan have received education in the Center. This Center is especially necessary for such young states, as the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Having thanked Minister of Defense for warm reception, Dr John Rose has told: “It is very pleasant for me to have an exchange of opinions on value of the Marshall Center. He expressed to the Minister of Defense gratitude for sending to the Center from Azerbaijan the prepared officers, has in detail told about purpose, structure, activity and educational process of the Organization he heads. The visitor has told: “Currently, 200 students from 31 countries receive education in the Center. Of them, 9 are from Azerbaijan. In the Marshall Center, are studied, it is possible to tell, all questions with which the region of South Caucasus and other regions face. We also carry out conference, seminars and courses in the Center on various problems”.
General - colonel S. Abiyev and the visitor exchanged opinions on the problems existing in region of South Caucasus. The minister emphasized, that the heaviest for Azerbaijan problem is occupation by Armenia of 20 percent of the Azerbaijan lands and living of more than one million refugees and IDPs in heavy conditions. Azerbaijan is one of the states most actively cooperating with the NATO within the framework of the “Partnership for Peace” Program. Azerbaijan also carries out active cooperation with the western states, first of all, with the United States of America in economic sphere.
Then, informing the visitor about large-scale projects carried out in Azerbaijan, Safar Abiyev has told: “Our primary goal consists in safety of these large projects. In territories occupied by Armenia have been accumulated a huge quantity of weapons and ammunition that creates threat of renewal of fighting operations.
Despite of requirements of 4 resolutions of Security Council of the United Nations Organization and the statement of Chairman of the Security Council for unconditional liberation of the Azerbaijani lands, Armenia does not wish to refrain from its aggressive claims.
Armenia and Azerbaijan are participants of the PfP Program of the NATO. Entering this program, both states have accepted certain obligation to recognize borders and territorial integrity of each other. However, Armenia does not carry out also this obligation. Unfortunately, leadership of the NATO to this day has not asked for it from Armenia and has not given an assessment to the fact of occupation by it of the Azerbaijani lands. Some states even support aggressive Armenia, and therefore, we come to such a conclusion that our lands should be released by force.
Doctor J. Rose has thanked general - colonel S. Abiyev for the detailed information connected to safety issues of Azerbaijan.
Then, the parties have touched other problems interesting them, general - colonel S. Abiyev has answered questions of the visitor.
Ambassador of the United States of America to Azerbaijan Republic Rino Harnish took part at the meeting.
