AZERBAIJAN’S AMBASSADOR TO USA ATTENDS ANNUAL WOMEN AMBASSADORS CONFERENCE
Yashar Aliyev, ambassador of Azerbaijan to the United States, took part at the 12th Annual Women Ambassadors Conference, organized by congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, the Howard University in Washington D.C., and the Women Ambassadors Foundation. At the Conference convened under the motto “The Challenges of Diplomacy in a Volatile and Increasingly Interdependent World”, the Ambassador of Azerbaijan addressed with the lecture “Who are the beneficiaries of Conflicts?”
Azerbaijani diplomat said the conflicts occuring in this or that country influence not only concrete territory, but also on wider region. Thus, the population of all world directly or indirectly suffers from the conflict. He produced statistical data about the women and children who became victims of conflicts. According to the Ambassador, first of all, the groups engaged in trade of the weapon benefit from the conflicts. The given process gets in some cases support of the transnational companies and the governments, therefore, it is impossible to prevent it completely, he emphasized.
Yashar Aliyev, in detail informed on the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the occupation of 20 percent of territory of Azerbaijan, that as a result of aggression of Armenia 1 million Azerbaijanis have become refugees and IDPs. The diplomat emphasized, that all over the world, including in Azerbaijan, most of all, the women and children suffer from confrontations.
The diplomat noted, that in October 2000, the UN Secutiry Council has unanimously accepted the resolution " Women, the Peace and Safety ". After that, the state and non-governmental structures in a number of the countries began to pay special attention to the question of protection of the rights of women during conflicts.
Representatives of the Department of State, diplomatic coprs in Washington, scientific circles, and also Hollywood have addressed to conference with reports on various topics, have shared views on influence of process of globalization on the world countries, the role of Hollywood, as tool of public diplomacy, and so on.
One of organizers of the conference, a leading member of working group on Afro-Americans and to women of the Congress Mrs. Eddie Bernice Johnson in the past year has made statement in the Congress on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of independence of Azerbaijan.
