Azerbaijan`s Minister of Youth and Sports addresses conference at Columbia University
Baku, March 28 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan`s Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov, who is currently visiting the US, addressed the youth conference co-organized by the Columbia University and the Office of the UN Secretary General`s Envoy on Youth. The conference themed around marginalization and inequalities facing youth was attended by famous academicians, professors, representatives of some countries and international organizations, students of US and European universities and youth activists.
Minister Rahimov said in his remarks that he supports the conduct of such events. He spoke of Azerbaijan’s youth policy model, its priorities and achievements. He also touched upon the first Global Forum on the youth policy to be held later in October and invited the event participants to this forum. Rahimov noted the forum is expected to bring together about 700 participants including experts, representatives of regional and international organizations.
The executive director of the UN Population Fund Babatunde Osotimehin welcomed the initiative to conduct the first global forum on youth policy in Baku and investments in the youth in Azerbaijan.
Rahimov presented the Azerbaijani carpet to the Columbia University`s museum.
The Minister also addressed the panel on the role of the UN in realization of the youth potential. He noted that the principle Work and Commitment to Youth announced by the UN Secretary General occupies an important place in the modern youth policy. He underlined Azerbaijan had achieved great successes in this respect.
Following the conference, Rahimov met with UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Europe and CIS, Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu.
During the meeting, Sultanoglu said that during her frequent trips to Azerbaijan she witnessed great development.
