Baku hosts Founding Meeting of Azerbaijan National Committee of ICOMOS
Baku, April 18 (AZERTAC). Baku has hosted the Founding Meeting of the Azerbaijan National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
The meeting was attended by president of ICOMOS Gustavo Araoz.
Speaking to the event, minister of culture and tourism Abulfaz Garayev provided an insight into Azerbaijan`s historical and cultural heritage.
He praised the government`s attention to preserving and promoting the country`s legacy.
The minister said president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva was playing a crucial role in promoting Azerbaijan`s cultural values and historical heritage on the international scale.
ICOMOS president Araoz said the organization was ready to assist Azerbaijan in preserving its historical monuments. He expressed confidence Azerbaijan would be an important partner of ICOMOS after becoming its member.
ICOMOS is a professional association that works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places around the world.
It was founded in 1965 in Warsaw as a result of the Venice Charter of 1964, and offers advice to UNESCO on World Heritage Sites.
ICOMOS currently has over 7,500 members.
In response to a proposal by ICOMOS, UNESCO designated 18 April as the ‘International Day for Monuments and Sites’.
