Baku hosts Rose Roth seminar
Baku, June 16 (AZERTAC). The 86th Rose Roth seminar “South Caucasus: Challenges and opportunities” organized by the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and NATO Parliamentary Assembly kicked off on Monday.
The opening session moderated by Head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the NATO PA, First deputy speaker of Azerbaijan`s Parliament Ziyafet Asgarov saw Milli Majlis Speaker Ogtay Asadov speaking. He noted that the exchange of views at the seminar would contribute to resolution of problems related to stability and security in the South Caucasus.
“The Rose-Roth seminar, which has been held in Baku for the third time, coincided in time with the remarkable event - 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s joining the Partnership for Peace program. As President Ilham Aliyev said, Azerbaijan-NATO relations were upgraded to the level of strategic partnership during 20 years of Azerbaijan`s Partnership for Peace Program membership,” the speaker said.
He noted that the main areas of partnership of Azerbaijan with the NATO are political dialogue, participation in peacekeeping operations, fight against threats to security, practical cooperation in security and defense reforms.
On the Azerbaijan-Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Asadov noted that the Armenian aggression resulted in occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands, displacement of over 1 million Azerbaijani citizens.
President of the NATO PA Hugh Bayley said that the seminar is important for organizing a dialogue of parliamentarians and ensuring security in the region. Azerbaijan is located in a strategically complex region. According to him, resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a topical issue. NATO will make every effort to establish mutual understanding and trust in order to find a peaceful solution to the dispute.
Swiss ambassador to Azerbaijan Pascal Aebischer touched upon the importance of the seminar. The ambassador said the seminar is a good opportunity for discussing security and stability in the South Caucasus.
