BP supporting children from vulnerable families to receive higher education

BP and its co-venturers in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, Shah Deniz, and South Caucasus Pipeline projects - SOCAR, TPAO, PETRONAS, Chevron, LUKOIL, NICO, Equinor, INPEX, ExxonMobil, SGC, ITOCHU, ONGC, TOTAL, Eni - today celebrated the success of 78 participants in their “Build your Future” project who have passed university admission exams becoming students this year.
The project is part of BP’s and its co-venturers’ commitment to helping neighbouring communities through enhancing their skills and capabilities. It aims to support young people from vulnerable families in their preparation for university admission. The participants include 11th-graders as well as high school graduates with disabilities or special needs.
BP and its co-venturers have been supporting this project for the past three years benefiting more than 200 young people selected from the communities residing in the Garadagh, Kurdamir, Ujar, Agdash and Yevlakh districts. Initially the project was designed for the Garadagh district communities. In the following two years it was expanded to cover the four additional districts along the BP-operated pipelines.
In total, some 188 young people out of 207 participants in the three phases - 91%, have been successful meeting the requirements of the higher school entrance exams and becoming students. Built on the overall success of this initiative, BP and its co-venturers have decided to continue the project into the next year further expanding it to cover the Hajigabul district.
The programme has two components - academic knowledge to support exam preparations through tutorial classes, and social integration through various activities and external engagement.
Addressing the celebration event, hosted by BP on behalf of its co-venturers, Bakhtiyar Aslanbayli, BP’s Vice President, Communications and External Affairs, Strategy and Region, said: “We are excited by the success of these young people who with the support of our project have selected their future career path. Today they are embarking on a long journey of learning, knowledge and development. We very much hope that this journey will lead them to the world of growth and professionalism and will help them build their successful future. We are also encouraged by the project results this year with one participant scoring high - 607 and, and 16 participants above 500 in their university entrance exams. These are great results. We wish all the participants in the project a big success.”
The total value of the three phases of the project is around 764,000 AZN (phase 1 - around 61,000 AZN; phase 2 - more than 402, 000 AZN and phase 3 - around 300,000 AZN) with the duration of 15 months for each of phases 1 and 2, and 12 months for phase 3.
