Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea towns mop up after floods

Baku, July 17 (AZERTAC). The state of emergency in the Bulgarian southern Black Sea town of Primorsko declared after flooding was lifted on July 17, with that in the town of Byala expected to follow later in the day.

Torrential rainfall that hit the area, a popular summer seaside holiday destination, led to road closures on July 16 while hotels, residential buildings and campsites were inundated.

In Byala, heavy rains turned streets into rivers, and at Karadere beach, 13 campers had to be evacuated.

The mayor of Primorsko told public broadcaster Bulgarian National Television on July 17 that part of the problem in the town when the floodwaters hit was that the old sewerage system could not cope with the vast amount of water from the floods.

The mayor of Byala, Atanas Trendafilov, said that it was expected that the emergency declared in the town would be cancelled by the end of July 17. All buildings had been drained and no road sections were underwater. The most damage in the town was to pavements, he said.

The town would apply to the state interdepartmental committee for funding to repair infrastructure damaged by the floods, he said.
