COE CONDUCTS SEMINAR ON MEDIA FREEDOM AND ETHICS IN BAKU
The seminar was addressed by Robert Walter, member of the UK Parliament, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on the Media of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Samad Seyidov, Rector of the Azerbaijan University of Languages, Member of the Parliament of Azerbaijan and Chairman of the Parliamentary Delegation of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe, Denis Bribosia, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in Baku, Rafael Huseynov, Member of the Parliament of Azerbaijan, Rapporteur of the Committee on Culture Science and Education of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Speakers highlighted the significance of the event.
Chief of the department for socio-political issues of the Presidential Administration Ali Hasanov spoke of the government’s actions to ensure freedom of speech and media in Azerbaijan and fact that all media-related laws were brought in line with European standards. He also touched on the responsibility of journalists. According to him, because of some factors, some media outlets mix the freedom of thought and law violations.
A. Hasanov expressed his confidence that seminar will transparently discuss problems of Azerbaijani media and propose the way out.
Then, the seminar was continued in sessions “training of journalists: concepts and practice”, “training objectives: ethics of journalism, media self-regulation and the law”.
Then, seminar participants heard the report on Essential components of journalism training by Maia Mikashavidze, Dean of the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management, report on Teaching Journalism standards in the light of media laws on privacy, defamation and hate-speech by Rashid Hajili, Director, Media Law Institute of Azerbaijan, report on Ethics of Journalism and media self-regulation by Wolfgang Mayer, Member of the Steering Committee of the European Federation of Journalists, Member of the German Press Council.
The discussions also involved Milli Majlis deputy Elmira Akhundova, teacher of the Tbilisi State University David Paichadze, teacher of the Baku State University Aynur Bashirli.
