Europe-Persia Express Gateway begins commercial use
Baku, September 12 (AZERTAC). The Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) cable network has begun commercial operations. EPEG cable project, which links Frankfurt in Germany to Oman via Eastern Europe, Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, was built by a consortium formed by Rostelecom, Vodafone, Iranian telecommunications company TIC and Oman company Omantel. The initial capacity of the line is 540 Gbps and EPEG runs for around 10,000 kilometres. The network crosses Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, the Gulf and reaches Oman. The capacity is planned to be raised to 3.2 Tbps.
The Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) cable network is a major project supported by the Azerbaijan`s Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies. Azerbaijan operator Delta Telecom also cooperated in deploying the line.
On June 8, 2011 a consortium of four leading telecom carriers from four countries signed the Construction and Maintenance Agreement for the new cable system — Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG).
The EPEG will be a brand new high capacity fiber optic cable system which links Europe with Middle East and a possibility of further extension to Gulf regional countries and India subcontinent.
EPEG will allow telecommunication transit route alternative to the Red Sea, Suez Canal, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea regions and can play an important role for traffic re-routing in case of earthquakes and disasters, which have been known to affect multiple systems at once.
