FIRST LADY OF AZERBAIJAN WELCOMED TO US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
New co-chair of the congressional Azerbaijan caucus, representative from Pennsylvania Bill Shuster, on his own behalf and on behalf of Rep. Solomon Ortiz, thanked the First Lady of Azerbaijan and members of her group for the visit.
The congressman called on the members of the Parliament of Azerbaijan, which he described as one of the US’ important strategic partners, to support activities and coordination efforts of the interparliamentary working group.
Rep. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, who had earlier met with Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva and members of the Azerbaijan parliament, said the House of Representatives recognize the US-Azerbaijan strategic partnership, joint fight against the global terrorism, and Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable energy supplier for Europe. She added the country whose economic growth is going to reach 30% this year, is being intensively modernized. Having described Azerbaijan as developing democracy, Mrs. Sekula-Gibbs mentioned the country’s efforts towards widening of its possibilities in social, political and economic spheres.
She noted that Azerbaijan’s relating initiatives can serve as an example for other states in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Rep. Sekula-Gibbs informed her colleagues about the programs being implemented by the Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva-led Heydar Aliyev Foundation - the Caucasus’ largest non-governmental organization - in education, healthcare, international relations, culture and other humanitarian fields.
The congresswoman, who is a doctor by profession, especially praised the fact that her colleague Dr. Mehriban Aliyeva uses her medical knowledge in charitable activities.
