Flying hat causes damage to historic painting in Wismar

In Wismar, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a cherished 184-year-old painting in the town hall has been severely damaged due to an unfortunate incident during a graduation ceremony, according to the Munich Eye.
The artwork, which depicts former Mayor Anton Haupt and has adorned the walls of the town hall since the first freely elected city council in 1990, was accidentally struck by a thrown hat. The incident occurred when a recent graduate, celebrating his achievements at the ceremony, mistakenly tossed his graduation cap in the wrong direction, hitting the historic painting instead.
The painting, created by artist Carl Düberg in 1841, commemorates Haupt, who served as mayor from 1826 until his death in 1835. Weeks passed before members of the town council noticed the absence of the painting from its usual spot in the council chamber. During a recent council session, Mayor Thomas Beyer addressed the situation, confirming that the artwork had been damaged at an event held in September of the previous year. He assured the council that restoration efforts were underway and emphasized that the financial responsibility for the repairs would fall on the individual who caused the damage.
The damage to the painting is significant, with a 15-centimeter tear resulting from the impact of the hat. Parts of the paint layer and base coat have also been dislodged, necessitating careful restoration work. While the exact cost of the repairs has not been disclosed, reports indicate that the graduate will be liable for approximately 4,500 euros.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Mayor Beyer expressed optimism that the painting would be returned to its rightful place in the council chamber by September 2025, coinciding with the 125th anniversary of Anton Haupt's birth. This restoration will ensure that the historical significance of the painting is preserved for future generations, allowing the community to continue appreciating its cultural heritage.
