GUAM-TRANSIT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE UNDERWAY IN BAKU
The two-day international conference entitled the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - Transit is continuing in Baku.
The conference brings together representatives of transport authorities of the EU states, Central Asian and Baltic countries, as well as government representatives.
Speaking on the first day of the event, Azerbaijan`s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Coordinator for GUAM Araz Azimov said the conference is aimed at discussing prospects for increasing potential of the GUAM transit corridor and attracting international support and investment.
Azimov stressed documents adopted at GUAM`s 2007 Baku Summit have laid a solid foundation for future development of transport corridor Europe-GUAM-Asia.
Azerbaijan`s deputy minister of transport Musa Panahov said thanks to their geographic situation GUAM states are the natural corridor between Europe and Asia.
He noted in the last two years Azerbaijan spent $1 billion to developing transport corridors.
Other speakers including Georgian deputy minister of energy Nino Enukidze, Moldavian deputy transport and road management minister Pavel Untura, GUAM Secretary Valeri Chechelashvili and Japanese ambassador to Azerbaijan Masamutsi Oki stressed the GUAM-Transit Conference will give its contributions to developing the region`s transport corridor.
The second day of the conference will feature a meeting of the working group on the level of deputy transport ministers of GUAM countries to discuss expansion of mutual transport cooperation within the organization.
