Indonesia, Malaysia hold prisoner swap talks

Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Penitentiary Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail discussed a prisoner exchange accord during a meeting here on Tuesday, according to ANTARA.
"In the meeting, we discussed for the follow-up, in the not too distant future, about the prisoner exchange between Indonesia and Malaysia," Mahendra informed.
He said that the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia will later discuss the names that will be included in the prisoner exchange, when it will be implemented, and other details related to the process.
He revealed that the current prisoner transfer policy is carried out at President Prabowo Subianto's discretion and takes into account aspects of international relations, cooperation with neighboring countries, and the principles of various humanitarian pacts.
"Indonesia does not yet have a legal umbrella that regulates the transfer and exchange of prisoners between countries. So the decision on this matter is an implication of the President's policy by considering good relations with other countries," he said.
Based on existing data, 5,592 Indonesian prisoners are currently imprisoned in Malaysia, while 302 Malaysians are serving time in Indonesian jails.
Mahendra also emphasized the importance of synergy between the two countries in facing increasingly complex global challenges in law and immigration.
"Indonesia and Malaysia have close historical and cultural ties. Therefore, cooperation in law enforcement and protection of human rights for the citizens of both countries must continue to be strengthened," he added.
Meanwhile, Minister Ismail expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome extended by the Indonesian government and emphasized Malaysia's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Malaysia understands the importance of protecting Indonesian workers working in the country, he said.
The Malaysian government is committed to continuing to improve protection mechanisms and strengthening cooperation with Indonesia in various aspects, including in managing immigration and eradicating transnational crime, he added.
The meeting between the two ministers is expected to further strengthen diplomatic relations, particularly in the fields of law, human rights, immigration, and corrections, as well as provide real benefits for the people of the two countries.
