Luis Suarez and Uruguay shake England 2-1
Baku, June 20 (AZERTAC). Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has spent the past season terrorizing English club defenses. In Sao Paulo, he struck twice on the international stage to defeat England, 2-1, in a Group D clash.
Before the game, the question was whether Suarez was 100 percent fit. It took 39 minutes to get an answer. Edinson Cavani floated a beautiful cross that was just too high for England defender Phil Jagielka. Suarez was lurking just behind to place a low header past keeper Joe Hart.
England equalized in the 75th minute, when Wayne Rooney tapped in Glen Johnson’s cross from close range, but it was Uruguay and Suarez who took all three points when Fernando Muslera’s booming clearance was knocked on by the colliding figures of Cavani and Steven Gerrard. The loose ball fell kindly for Suarez who raced in alone on goal and lashed a shot past a helpless Hart.
Uruguay now has 3 points in Group D, along with Costa Rica and Italy, who face off tomorrow in their second game.
Uruguay will face the Italians in the final group game on Tuesday in Natal. England, now all but mathematically eliminated, will see out its campaign against Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte.
