Moldovan ombudsperson receives “Historical Signature” award in Azerbaijan
Baku, November 4 (AZERTAC). Moldovan Ombudsperson Aurelia Grigoriu has been presented “Historical Signature” award at a meeting with representatives of Azerbaijani NGOs and media outlets in Baku. She was honored for voicing support - during a speech at the Armenian parliament in Yerevan earlier this year - for Azerbaijan`s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and condemning Armenia`s committing a genocide in the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly.
Speaking at the meeting, chairman of the Centre of Cooperation of Azerbaijanis and other Turkic-speaking peoples Ilham Ismayilov thanked the Moldovan Ombudsman for backing Azerbaijan`s position. “Aurelia Grigoriu`s brave statement about Armenia`s occupation of 20% of the Azerbaijani lands, and her calling on the international community to recognize the massacre in the town of Khojaly as genocide shows how much respect she has towards human rights.”
Azerbaijani Ombudsperson Elmira Suleymanova noted that Azerbaijan's main problem is the occupation of its lands by Armenia. Suleymanova added the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains unresolved because of Armenia's disrespect to the resolutions of international organizations. However, she said, the number of Azerbaijan's supporters on this issue is growing.
"There have been ombudsmen among those who support us, but Aurelia Grigoriu raised this issue at the Armenian Parliament, basing on the facts and in full accordance with the truth. But, the Armenians, unable to say anything, again demonstrated their insidious policy to the entire world and showed aggression against a representative of another country," Suleymanova said.
