Novruz holiday marked at British City University
London, March 21 (AZERTAC). “Azerbaijan” society has organized an event to celebrate Novur holiday at British City University.
The event was joined by students from various countries and teachers of the university.
Chairman of the society Azer Asgarov highlighted history of Novruz. He said the United Nations adopted a resolution to mark the 21st of March as an International Novruz Day.
Employee of Azerbaijan`s embassy Vusal Abdullayev said the holiday, which marks the coming of a new astronomical year and the reawakening of nature, has always been the Azerbaijani people´s most cherished holiday. Novruz is celebrated every year on 20-21-22 March, from the moment of the vernal equinox. But according to tradition, people begin to prepare for this holiday from the last month of winter, continue the holiday celebrations with the arrival of the equinox and carry on celebrating into the New Solar Year.
He said Novruz was officially registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Participants of the event tasted Azerbaijan`s dishes, including shakarbura, pakhlava and goghal. Pieces of music and dances performed by students were met with great interest.
