Azerbaijan’s Commissioner for Human Rights Mrs. Elmira Suleymanova has sent a letter to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross’ Baku Office Martin Amacher calling on him to make efforts to release an Azerbaijani soldier captured by Armenian militaries last year.

The Ombudswoman said Samir Mammadov has been in captivity since seized by Armenians on December 24 of 2006.

Mrs. Suleymanova said she has repeatedly met with the soldier’s parents, who said they were worry about the safety and condition of their son, and that they did not know where he is being held.

Elmira Suleymanova urged Martin Amacher to help release the Azerbaijani soldier from Armenian captivity as soon as possible.

The Ombudswoman also made a similar request in a letter to Jakob Kellenberger, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

She called on Mr. Kellenberger to make efforts to secure the soldier’s return, and ask his captors to treat him well.
