PACE Standing Committee meeting held in Baku
Baku, May 23 (AZERTAC). A meeting of the PACE Standing Committee has kicked off in Baku under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers.
The meeting was attended by Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland, President of the PACE Anne Brasseur, Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov, as well as delegations of the members states.
PACE President Anne Brasseur hailed the organization of the meeting.
She praised the Azerbaijani government`s reforms to strengthen the fight against corruption.
Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov expressed confidence that the country`s chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers would see the adoption of the decisions “that will contribute to expanding unity in Europe”.
Asadov highlighted the priorities of Azerbaijan`s chairmanship of the Committee, saying they included combating corruption, solving social issues, developing multiculturalism and education.
The Speaker said Azerbaijan had always been committed to fulfilling its obligations to the Council of Europe.
On the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh, Asadov said the PACE had always paid special attention to finding a solution to the dispute, and pointed to the organization`s referring to four resolutions of the UN Security Council in its documents concerning the settlement of the problem.
FM Mammadyarov provided an insight into Azerbaijan’s major targets and priorities during its chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers.
The Minister noted Azerbaijan had historically been a country where representatives of different nations and religions lived in harmony, peace and friendship.
He noted the Standing Committee meeting would focus on the development of human rights and democracy, the fight against corruption, the expansion of regional multiculturalism.
Mammadyarov said a total of 18 events would be held in Azerbaijan under the country’s tenure as the chair of the Committee of Ministers.
