PARLIAMENT HELD HEARINGS DEVOTED TO ANNIVERSARY OF THE KHOJALY GENOCIDE

On February 26, hearings devoted to 15th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide took place in Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan Parliament).

Taking the floor, Parliament speaker Ogtay Asadov, in particular, said: “The Khojaly genocide perpetrated by the Armenian vandals is one of the most terrible tragedies of the XX century, a crime directed not only against Azerbaijanis, but also all humanity. This tragedy will remain in memory of our people forever.”

O. Asadov said the perpetrators of this massacre will answer to Azerbaijan people and all mankind. He noted the decision has been made at the last session of the parliament on holding hearings devoted to 15th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, and the commission for development of drafts of documents on this question has been set up. The commission has prepared a draft resolution and declaration.

After display of the documentary on the Khojaly genocide, the head of the commission, parliament vice-speaker Bahar Muradova read the draft resolution.

It was noted that the night from 25th to 26th February 1992, the act of genocide was accomplished against Azerbaijanis in the Khojaly town of the Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Azerbaijan Republic. Participants of this monstrous crime directed not only against Azerbaijan people, but also all mankind, are known. These are units of armed forces of the Republic of Armenia, the Armenian terrorist groups in Nagorno-Karabakh and staff of the 366th motor-rifle regiment of the former Soviet army deployed in Khankendi. That night, the Armenian fascists, attacking Khojaly in several directions, conducted bloody carnage against inhabitants. 613 peaceful Azerbaijanis, including children, women and elderly have been killed with special cruelty. 8 families have been completely annihilated, 1275 inhabitants - old men, children, women were taken hostages and subjected to extreme insults and tortures. The destiny of 150 hostages, including 68 women and 26 children, remains unknown till now. The frenzied executioners scalped the killed people, cut out their bodies, pricked out eyes of babies, ripped up stomachs of pregnant women, buried alive or burnt people. The Khojaly tragedy became new bloody page of the genocide and the ethnic cleanse carried out by brutal Armenian nationalists against Azerbaijanis in last hundred years.

Then, the parliamentarians held a wide discussion on the draft. The deputies underlined the importance of reflection of all Armenian nationalists who have perpetrated the Khojaly genocide, as well as acts of terrorism against Azerbaijanis and Turks in the draft resolution and declaration. It was noted that in any case the international organizations should approve the right of Azerbaijan to clearing of its occupied lands.

At 17.00 pm, the deputies kept a minute of silence to the memory of victims of the Khojaly genocide.

The final decision will be made at the forthcoming session of the parliament on February 27.
