RF, AZERBAIJAN: INTER-PARLIAMENTARY COMMISSION’S SESSION BEGINS IN BAKU
In his opening remarks, vice-chairman of the Milli Majlis, co-chair of the Commission on Azerbaijan side Valeh Alaskarov spoke of rising bilateral relations between two countries. The countries, he said, have reached notable achievements in cooperation in the political, economic and cultural fields. The inter-parliamentary links are also high level. The economic ties intensively develop. Currently, 390 Russian cowponies function in Azerbaijan. Of them, 170 are joint ventures, while 95 functions with the Russian capital and 124 are filial and branches of the Russian companies. The trade turnover between two countries has reached 900 million dollars (Jan-Aug 206), while the total figure in 2005 was 1 billion dollars. There are large potential to increase this figure.
There are some problems impeding development of bilateral relations, Mr. Alaskarov stressed. One of them is delimitation of the borders, after settlement of which the bilateral ties will broaden much more.
Vice-chairperson of the RF Federal Council, co-chair of the Commission Svetlana Orlova thanked for hospitality they were shown. She spoke of the centuries-old bilateral relations between two countries. At her words, the personal friendly relations between two presidents promote widening of these ties. However, the sides should do much to reach 2-billion trade turnover between the countries, she emphasized. Conducting the Year of Russia in Azerbaijan and Year of Azerbaijan in Russia have 0layed great role in deepening of these ties.
Ms. Orlova also informed that the working groups are discussing the delimitation questions and many of them were agreed.
Then, the session continued without participation of media representatives.
