ROUNDTABLE ON DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN HELD
On March 1, a “round table” took place in the Ombudsman Office in connection with realization of purposes and principles of the United Nations Convention “On elimination of all forms of discrimination against women” aiming at discussion of final recommendations of the corresponding committee of the United Nations according to the report of the Azerbaijan government for the second and third periods.
Representatives of the government, as well as members of Council of the Independent Experts consisting of the nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) took part in the event organized in common by the Ombudsman Office and the State Committee for Family, Women and Children’s Affairs.
Noting the importance of the event, Ombudsperson Elmira Suleymanova said the work carried out in Azerbaijan in the field of protection of human rights, settlement of family, women and children problems, gender equality, is highly estimated by corresponding bodies of the United Nations. She stated that after gaining its independence, Azerbaijan has joined more than 220 conventions on human rights.
Speaking about existing wide material resources in the field of protection of human rights and gender equality, E. Suleymanova emphasized the importance of joint activity of all corresponding state structures, NGOs in the direction of elimination of such negative facts as observable today marriage at early age, violence over women, infringement of their rights in Azerbaijan.
After Vice-President of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children’s Affairs Sadagat Gahramanova gave to participants the information related to the final recommendations of corresponding committee of the United Nations, representatives of various structures expressed their opinions and offers.
