STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT MICHAEL SAAKASHVILI
President of Georgia spoke of the importance of the signed documents, estimating them as a new stage in region’s history. President Saakashvili, in particular, said:“The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project is directly connected with the welfare of the people, citizens, the improvement of life conditions in region. It has political sense and I think, strategically it will create a new situation and bring closer the three countries. On one hand, the Central Asia and China, on the other, Europe will stick together here. It may also be concerned to restoration of the Silk Road. It, somehow, completes it. It is useful for our partners, too.”
President of Georgia said by this project his country acquires huge transit function, which, according to him, will have influence on geographical situation as well. So, Europe and the Central Asia will connect by this railway.
President Saakashvili touched upon the special visa regime between Georgia and Turkey, expressing wish to simplify it in the years to come.
Michael Saakashvili gratefully stressed Azerbaijan’s assistance to his country in gas supply, noting “exclusive character” of this step by Azerbaijan leadership. “Azerbaijan delivered natural gas to Georgia when we faced severe cold winter. Our people will never forget this. This was another test for our friendship relations. That means a large-scale, diversified relations”, President Saakashvili underlined.
President of Georgia emphasized importance of the project for regional cooperation and once again expressed gratitude to the President of Azerbaijan and Prime Minister of Turkey for such noteworthy cooperation.
