STATEMENT OF THE FEDERAL CHANCELLOR OF GERMANY ANGELA MARKEL
After the meeting, the heads of state held a joint news conference and made statement.
The existing relations between Azerbaijan and Germany, as well as with the European Union are important, Mrs. Angela Markel stated. I consider they are important for both Azerbaijan and the European Union. We focused on the ongoing development processes in Azerbaijan as well making accent for further economic and socio-political reforms.
We have also discussed the development of democracy, she said. I think, development of democracy is important in transformation process, the German Chancellor stressed.
Speaking of the economic progress Azerbaijan achieved last years, Angela Markel said that “they prefer cooperation with Azerbaijan mainly in economic field, in particular, in the energy sphere”. “By developing the existing ties between the European Union and Azerbaijan, Germany will render to Azerbaijan every economic support in diversification of its economy”, she said. At her words, “economic cooperation between the European Union and Azerbaijan and between the two countries will acquire higher level in the years to come”.
We also shared views on the relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, Iran’s nuclear program, as Azerbaijan is a neighboring country to Iran, the Chancellor said.
She once again welcomed the President of Azerbaijan expressing confidence for further development of bilateral relations.
