SYRIA SHOWS INTEREST IN REGIONAL PROJECT
Visitng Syria Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov met here on Wednesday with President Bahshar Asad.
The Syrian leader stressed the importance of opening embassies in both countries. Minister Mammadyarov informed President Asad that Azerbaijan embassy in Syria will be opened this year. He also updated him on the course of negotiations on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The President showed interest in the projects Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum and Baku-Tbilisi-Kars suggesting that Azerbaijani, Turkish and Syrian specialists work together on them.
Elmar Mammadyarov conveyed to Syrian leader a President Ilham Aliyev’s invitation to visit Azerbaijan. President Asad accepted the invitation and promised to visit Azerbaijan in the near future.

On the same day, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister met with his counterpart Valid Al-Muallim to exchange views on bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Syria, the countries’ cooperation within the Organization of the Islamic Conference, and international and regional issues.
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh was one of the topics of the conversation. Syrian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of peaceful resolution of the conflict saying it has to be solved on the base of international legal norms and principles, and resolutions and adopted by international organizations.
Valid Al-Muallim touched upon the situation in the Middle East and the Arabic-Israeli conflict, and the settlement plan adopted at the League of Arab States summit.
The Ministers also discussed issues related to cultural cooperation and students exchange between Azerbaijan and Syria.

Having finished his visit Foreign Minister Mammadyarov left Syria for Lebanon.
