TWO NEW POWER STATIONS TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN AZERBAIJAN
“The new power station “Shimal-2” is to be constructed. At the same time, the new station should be constructed in Sumgait. We must do it within short time to have no problems with energy supply. In the future, probably, Azerbaijan will be able to export the electric energy abroad”-president said.
According to the Azerenergy, it is scheduled to fabricate the second 400 megawatt combined-cycle plant /CCP/ in the Baku HPS “Shimal” while the first one was already fabricated by Mitsui Company of Japan in 2002. The plan of energy network development implies the fabrication of CCP-400 megawatt at “Shimali” and CCP-400-500 megawatt in Sumgait. The transportation of electricity to long distances is non-lucrative.
The back-up line is provided by the International Cooperation Bank of Japan /ICBJ/ to realize the project of second CCP’s construction. At present, the ICBJ experts are estimating the project together with Azerenergy, Ministries of Finance, Economic Development, Fuel and Energy, Azergas etc. the lax and long-term credit is expected to allot in spring 2004. the new plant will allow to increase a reliability and quality of energy supply of Absheron Peninsular.
In parallel with these activities, it is expected to construct the CCP at Sumgait Heat Station. The operation of two heat stations in Sumgait was stopped due to their unprofitability. Under such circumstances, the import of the Russian electric energy proved to be economically profitable.
In order to develop the energy sector in Sumgait it is decided to construct new 400-500 megawatt plant. It will allow providing reliable and trouble-free energy supply in Sumgait and Absheron Peninsular as a whole. Such heavyweight international companies as Siemens of Germany, Alstom of Switzerland, Enka of Turkey, Nichemen and Mitsui of Japan etc. are interested in this project.
