U.K.'s Princess Kate announces she is in remission from cancer

Baku, January 15, AZERTAC

Catherine, the Princess of Wales, said Tuesday she is in remission from cancer months after she finished chemotherapy treatment, according to NBC news.

“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery,” Kate, the wife of the heir to the throne, Prince William, wrote on Instagram.

“As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead,” she added. “There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.” She also thanked the Royal Marsden Hospital, one of the U.K.'s leading oncology facilities, for the care she received. "We couldn't have asked for more," she said. Kate revealed she had cancer in a surprise video announcement in March. At the time she said she was undergoing “a course of preventative chemotherapy” on the advice of her medical team.

Her announcement came less than a month after King Charles III announced he had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. Doctors discovered the disease after he was hospitalized with an enlarged prostate, although the palace has said he does not have prostate cancer. Neither Kate nor Charles specified what type of cancer they have. The princess has made several public appearances since she revealed her diagnosis, attending the men’s final at Wimbledon with her daughter, Charlotte, 9, in July. Charlotte and sons Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, 6, joined Kate as she hosted the fourth annual Christmas carol service, “Together at Christmas,” at London's Westminster Abbey last month. It was a rare public appearance for the children, who were largely kept out of the public eye after her surgery.

Like Kate, Charles has also attended several engagements since he resumed public duties last year, including D-Day memorial services in France. And in October he embarked on a long tour of Australia and Samoa alongside Queen Camilla. Charles’ and Kate’s illnesses have highlighted the challenges faced by a slimmed-down royal family as the king pledges to cut costs. With fewer working royals available to carry out the ribbon cuttings, state events and awards ceremonies, the remaining family members have had to take on more events. Instead, Camilla; the king’s sister, Princess Anne; and his youngest brother, Prince Edward, have had to shoulder more of the load.
