Washington, August 18 (AZERTAC). The Washington Post has published a letter by Azerbaijan`s ambassador to the United States Elin Suleymanov addressed to the newspaper`s editor in response to “Azerbaijan prosecutes a prominent human rights defender on absurd charges” article.
The letter reads: “The merit of the charges against Leyla and Arif Yunus should be determined by the legal system in Azerbaijan, not by political campaigns. Their detention could have been avoided had they responded to the repeated summons to testify in an ongoing investigation. Instead, as the editorial noted, they rejected any interaction with law-enforcement officials. Wouldn’t that normally lead to a prosecutorial action in most legal systems, including in the United States?
As for the Yunuses’ interest in bringing peace to Armenia and Azerbaijan, we are working through the Minsk Group to achieve this. And while there is a dispute over Armenia’s illegal occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh, there is no dispute that this territory is an internationally recognized part of Azerbaijan.”
