Eternal Torch - Symbol of bloodiest page of Azerbaijan
Baku, April 1, AZERTAC
"Eternal Torch", a monument, is located on the highest point of Baku, in the Alley of Martyrs. It is a cemetery, which appeared after the night of January 20, 1990, when the Soviet troops committed an incredible crime in Baku. The people murdered in that terrible night were buried in the area called Mountainous Park. Thus, the Alley of Martyrs appeared. Shortly after these events, many Azerbaijani soldiers, who sacrificed themselves defending their lands in Karabakh, were also buried there... In fact, this was the repetition of the history. That was the place, where just decades ago, in 1918, thousands of Azerbaijanis were buried. They were people slaughtered by the Armenian nationalists. But the graves were covered up in the Soviet period, and attempts were made to conceal their names. And later the cemetery was transformed to the Park of Culture and Entertainment. By the decree of the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev the “Eternal Torch” monument was erected there in 1998.
