Assistant to President: Azerbaijan champions multilateralism
Baku, March 12, AZERTAC
“Azerbaijan supports multilateralism because it gives countries a voice at the table and facilitates both global and regional decision-making. For this reason, multilateralism holds significant importance for Azerbaijan. It is not limited to participation in various organizations but is also reflected in tangible actions,” said Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, during the panel session titled “Multilateralism in Crisis: Rethinking Global Cooperation” at the 13th Global Baku Forum.
Hikmet Hajiyev added: “When Azerbaijan assumed the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, some opinions suggested that this organization had become outdated and lost relevance. However, Azerbaijan’s tenure demonstrated that the NAM remains a platform capable of advancing multidimensional regional cooperation. Another example is COP29. Despite new challenges posed by climate diplomacy, Azerbaijan has shown its ability to ensure effective leadership. Under Azerbaijan’s COP29 presidency, important decisions have been adopted regarding the carbon market, the Loss and Damage Fund, and other critical issues.”
