AZERBAIJAN PRESIDENT RECEIVES RUSSIAN DELEGATION
Greeting the guests, the Head of State first of all expressed his satisfaction with the meetings the Russian delegation had held in Baku, visiting local sports complexes and signing bilateral agreement between the two countries’ Olympic Committees.
President Ilham Aliyev pointed out the good level of cooperation between the Olympic Committees of Russia and Azerbaijan saying this cooperation has been even strengthened since Leonid Tyagachov’s presidency of the Committee.
It was noted as well that the friendly relationship between the heads of the two committees is one of the important aspects of bilateral cooperation.
Speaking of the steady development of the Russia-Azerbaijan relations in many spheres, President Ilham Aliyev described his winter 2004 official visit ro the Russian Federation as very successful. He noted that the agreed conducting Days of Azerbaijan in Russia, and Days of Russia in Azerbaijan would allow to step forward in many areas, particularly, those related to the Olympic movement, sports, and humanitarian one as a whole.
President Ilham Aliyev invited the members of the Russian delegation to participate in the closing ceremony of the “What? Where? When?” intellectual game World Champ being held for the third time in Azerbaijan.
President of the country’s Olympic Committee Leonid Tyagachov thanked the Azerbaijan President for the sincere meeting, and conveyed to him warm greetings from all the Russian Olympians.
According to him, what also brings Russia and Azerbaijan closer is that both countries are governed by the persons who attach great importance to development of sports and propaganda of healthy way of life. Leonid Tyagachov described the cooperation agreement signed during this visit as a historical document.
Touching upon his friendly ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Azerbaijani leader pointed out that the friendship between the heads of the two states is also sealed with love to sport.
In conclusion, President Ilham Aliyev expressed hope for success of both Russia and Azerbaijan teams at the upcoming Olympic games.
Leonid Tyagachov presented an Olympic Cup to the Azerbaijani leader.
Present at the meeting were Minister of Youth, Sports and Tourism Abulfaz Garayev and other officials.
