Azerbaijani composer wins Gold Prize for Phoenix soundtrack

The soundtrack composed by Nigar Suleyman for director Rustam Sadigli’s feature film the Phoenix received the prestigious Gold Prize at the Erik Satie International Music Competition held in the United Kingdom. Among the recipients of the award were renowned composers from China, the United States, and other countries, which underscores the high international recognition of her piece.
At the film’s climax, the protagonist stands before a painting and undergoes a transformation, turning into the Phoenix. It is at this powerful moment that Nigar Suleyman’s music is heard, further amplifying the emotional impact of the scene, playing a crucial role in expressing not only the visual imagery but also the character’s internal transformation through a rich musical language.
In mythology and philosophy, the Phoenix symbolizes renewal, spiritual elevation, purity, kindness, and wisdom. In the film, the main character, guided by the music, leaves behind the pain and suffering of the past, embracing a state of spiritual peace and purity. The music here functions not merely as a collection of sounds but as a profound vehicle for conveying ideas and emotions.
Nigar Suleyman began her music education at the Bulbul Specialized Secondary Music School. She graduated from this institution in composition, studying under the well-known composer Piekeh Akhundova. In 2023, she successfully completed her composition studies at the Uzeyir Hajibeyov Baku Music Academy, under the mentorship of Professor Jeyhun Allahverdiyev.
She actively participated in numerous international masterclasses, seminars, and symposiums and also took part in various international music festivals and competitions. Her creative work stands out through its synthesis of classical tradition and modern musical exploration.
